Christchurch - 13th Feb

We got up and hurried to the kitchen where we had left our food and planned to have a bacon sandwich... we were absolutely devastated to find that our bacon and butter had been stolen...!!! Not happy bunnies... as they nicked the butter as well we couldn’t even have toast! Luckily we had some yoghurts left so ate them instead.

Before leaving we had a lovely skype catch up with Amanda’s friends Vicky, Gemma and Holly - who had just had her first son – the lovely Callum.

We said our goodbye’s to Julia and headed for the centre of Christchurch looking forward to a day in a city for a change. When we arrived in the centre of the city we were shocked to see the magnitude of the earthquake and how it had scarred the city. Most of the streets are closed or partially open and many buildings assigned for demolition. It was like a ghost town! The only people there really were tourists taking pictures of the fractured buildings.... including us!

The centre of the city was effectively closed so we started to panic that we would not find anywhere to sleep/eat that night after dropping off the van.  We headed to the local I-site to formulate a plan. They were ridiculously amazing in sorting us out – putting together an itinerary for the rest of our time in NZ.... which we talk about in the following days (stay tuned!).

We dropped the van off and we both felt relieved and a little bit sad to be saying goodbye to old Percy... he had done us proud and would be missed.... The Postman ALWAYS delivered! ;o) After heaving our rucksacks back to the YMCA hostel (we hadn’t carried them for three weeks!) we got to our room and we were delighted to have a proper double bed with a proper mattress and everything! Wow! Even some room to swing a cat... if we had one! We walked out to find a restaurant but had no luck, so went to a supermarket and bought ingredients for fajitas! Yummy yummy!
