Hanmer Springs - 15th Feb

The weather was even worse which meant that a boat trip probably would not have been that pleasurable. One group came back from a trip and said they felt really ill from all the waves. Instead we stayed in the town for a while, went to a coffee shop and then headed back to the hostel to catch up on some blogging!! We bought some bits from a shop so made ourselves a sausage sandwich (from the local butchers) to cheer us up..... it was no Cumberland!! We had some good chats with people in the hostel – a girl from Belgium and an older Dutch couple who now lived in the north island of NZ.

At 4.30pm we caught a bus to our next town – Hanmer Springs. The hostel we were staying at provided a shuttle service between the towns and we were the only people on the bus. The driver did the 4 hour round journey just for us! He was a backpacker who came to NZ 8 years ago and has never left since!

The hostel in Hanmer was really pretty and looked kind of like a ski chalet as it was a timber building with a big open plan dining, kitchen and mezzanine lounge area....sorry, no photos! The hostel offered free tea/coffee and best of all free Ice Cream!!! Gav was in his element! We made friends with a lovely Dutch couple (Joris & Hester) and also a German couple (who shared their apple crumble with us!!) We stayed up and talked most of the night comparing notes on our travels.
