Kiakoura - 14th Feb - Valentine's Day

We dragged ourselves out of our very comfy, soft bed at 6.30am feeling very sorry for ourselves to get a bus 2 hours up the coast to a town called KiaKoura, best known for a scenic backdrop and whale watching tours.

Our hostel was called ‘The Fish Tank’ and was themed like it was under the sea – murals of fish everywhere and driftwood dotted around. Even the signs were made from driftwood! It was very funky and very us, so we liked it more than others probably would!

The drive was very scenic and we could see some movement off the coast – maybe whales or dolphins but not sure. The whole bus ooooed and aaaared as we plodded along. We had a walk around the local shops and along the beach before heading back to the hostel to catch up on some sleep! The weather was not great – rainy and misty – so we didn’t feel like we were missing much!

In the evening we headed to a Thai restaurant a few doors down as a special valentines treat! We shared a bottle of wine and had some delicious food. To finish the night we headed to a pub across the road called ‘The Strawberry Tree’ which was recommended in The Lonely Planet guide books for its good atmosphere and live music. It did not let us down! Gav had a few pints of ‘Sheep Shagger’ (the locally brewed beer) and Amanda some So-Co before calling it a night. There was an Irish couple in the bar who were on honeymoon. They had a fair bit to drink and were making us laugh!
