Wanganui to Wellington - 2nd Feb

We left the campsite and headed for the centre of Wanganui before heading further south. The town was quite small but had some really nice gift shops and restaurants. Before leaving the town we went to the art museum which had some interesting exhibitions on Mauri culture and glass works.

The aim was to get to Wellington before the end of the day so we didn’t hang around long. Before Long we drove through a town that made us smile, it was called Bull. There were signs throughout the town saying “Bull – A Town Like No Udder”, “An UnforgetaBULL town” etc. There was a shop called “Afford-a-BULL”. They loved it!
Further south we stopped off at Waitateri as there were signs for a shipwreck called Hydrabad. Interestingly the main road in the town actually went across the beach.

We didn’t risk taking the van too far so parked up and had a lovely walk to where the shipwreck was located. This is what we saw!

To be honest we were slightly underwhelmed. The beach was very pretty and was scattered with huge amounts of driftwood.

After a brief stop in Foxton for lunch we hit the road again for Wellington. Just north of the town we stopped at Porirua to ask about campsites. The lady wasn’t very helpful and even failed to inform us that the Rugby Sevens competition was kicking off the next day and there was a big parade in Wellington centre that day. This meant that most of the accommodation was full!

After 2 hours of driving through mental traffic we arrived at Lower Hutte Top 10 campsite, about 20 minutes from the ferry port for us to get to the south island the next morning. The campsite was bustling with rugby fans, but we managed to find a quiet corner and got some good sleep.
